The film earned less than half its production costs at the box office. Some reviewers found the plot too complicated, though Pauline Kael praised it and Vincent Canby called it "pure, nutty fun." Over time, *Buckaroo Banzai* has been turned into books, comics, and a video game, building a loyal cult following.
The plot begins when Buckaroo Banzai and his mentor Dr. Tohichi Hikita finish building the "oscillation overthruster," a device that lets objects move through solid matter. Banzai tests it by driving his Jet Car through a mountain. During the trip, he enters another dimension. When he comes out, he finds an alien organism stuck to his car. Meanwhile, Dr. Emilio Lizardo, locked up in the Trenton Home for the Criminally Insane, sees news of Banzai's success. Back in 1938, Lizardo and Hikita had built a prototype overthruster in Princeton, New Jersey. Lizardo tested it too early and got trapped between dimensions, where he saw alien creatures. When his colleagues freed him, he emerged crazed and violent. Realizing Banzai has now reached the 8th dimension, Lizardo escapes the asylum to steal the overthruster.
